Damp and weatherproofing matter more here
Properties close to the Thames deal with more sustained damp than those further inland, which affects camera housings and cable joints over time. We spec a higher IP (ingress protection) rating as standard for riverside installs, and pay particular attention to sealing cable entry points — the single most common cause of a "mysteriously failed" camera near water is a joint that let moisture in months earlier.
Wildlife is a bigger factor than people expect
Riverside gardens attract more wildlife — and more wildlife means more false motion alerts, and occasionally, more physical damage to cabling or housings from birds and small mammals. We route and protect cabling with this specifically in mind, rather than using the same approach as a typical inland garden.
Long boundaries mean longer cable runs
Riverside plots in Marlow and Bourne End are often long and narrow, running back from the water. Covering the full boundary can mean substantially longer cable runs than a standard-depth garden — which is where the wired-vs-wireless decision (see our other article on this) often tips toward a hybrid approach, with wireless covering the furthest points from the house.
Positioning for the river itself
Many riverside customers specifically want a camera covering the water's edge — for boat security, general peace of mind, or simply to see the view. This needs careful angle planning to avoid the camera being blinded by sun reflecting off the water at certain times of day, something a fixed installation plan on paper doesn't always catch until you're actually on site at the right time of day.

- Flood risk to any ground-level equipment (recorders are always sited above likely flood level)
- Sun angle across the water at different times of day
- Realistic cable routing for the property's specific boundary shape
- Weatherproofing rating appropriate to genuine riverside exposure, not just standard "outdoor rated"
